Ancient history, beautiful scenery and charming beaches – all on this tiny lake-centre island. The gentle climate encourages fruit and berry growing. There is a herb garden with more than 800 aromatic, medicinal and flowering plants. Footpaths crisscross the extensive oak forest, planted in the 1830s to provide timber for the navy.
Cyclists will love the safe and quiet roads and tracks. Visingsö's own horse-drawn carriage, the Remmalag, offers tours to Kumlaby Church or Tempelgården Art Centre.
Peaceful historical sites include Brahe Church, near the harbour, which dates back to the 17th century when Count Per Brahe the Younger ruled the country of Visingsborg in splendour. The kings resided on Visingsö in the 12th century, when Sweden's first royal castle was built at Näs, in the south of the island. Ancient burial grounds bear witness to the history of man's long presence in this magical domain.
